The Life of Frederick Douglas
Published in Audio Cassette by Blackstone Audiobooks (August, 1997)
Average review score:

Freedom for allFredrick Douglas was literally one of the greatest minds of all time. As a slave he wanted to be a free man. He was illiterate and learned to be literate. In the end, he shared his thoughts and his life with us all so that all men could be free and have freedom not only the slave. The greatest lesson this man could teach anyone is that the key to freedom is through education and learning. Any form of slavery can be freedom if you simply learn and educate yourself. If you choose to be a slave to what you are a slave of then you are a slave. If you wish to be free, learn and be free.

The Life of Hon. William F. Cody/Buffalo Bill: An Autobiography
Published in Paperback by Univ of Nebraska Pr (December, 1980)
Average review score:

You can almost smell the buffalo cooking in the camp. The Wild West was an even more heroic epoch than is commonly understood. While Buffalo Bill became a self-promoter, basic facts are clear: he was a superior plains guide and scout and Indian fighter. He really was the master hunter of buffalo from horseback. He was a Pony Express rider, with all that entailed. He was friends with Wild Bill, Custer, and other notables. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for bravery on the battlefield (though sadly it was removed many years later because of a bureaucratic technicality of how he had been employed by the Army, not because of any change in the evaluation of the heroic deeds.
A most fascinating book. It gives one a different perspective to hear it from a participant.END

Lifetimes: True Accounts of Reincarnation
Published in Hardcover by Bobbs-Merrill Co (April, 1979)
Average review score:

A very imaginative description of after lifeThe book is very entertaining and gripping. The imagination of the author is commendable in keeping the interest of the reader on a tough subject like after life. Very realistically written, whether one wants to believe that the recollections are the person's imaginations or real is left upto the reader. But a very genuine effort has been made to document the recollections and no attempt has been made to substatiate or confirm the recollections as true.

A Little Compendium on That Which Matters
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (July, 1993)
Average review score:

Medicine for the SoulThis is one of those rare recent books that you can say is truly medicine for the soul- without being trite. This is a powerful spiritual book, yet it is not without humor, tolerance of other traditions, and guts. The guts come in with the liberal criticism of modern greed, materialism, nihilism and the status quo. Franck especially has no patience for what he calls pseudo-spirituality, which can be recognised by sentimentality, proselytising, fanaticism, holier-than-thou delusions, spiritual tourism, and unconcern for the suffering and injustice inflicted on the great majority of other people in the world.
Franck points out that true spirituality is based on first hand experience. This means that it is equally valid whether it is approached from Christian, Taoist, Buddhist, Jewish, or Sufi perspectives. This is not not spiritual tourism , it is recognising the Transcendent in all true paths. This is the basis of a vital, transcultural, transreligious spirituality.
The author served as a doctor with Albert Schweitzer's staff in Africa- and it truly shows.

The Little General and the Rousay Crofters: Crisis and Conflict on an Orkney Estate
Published in Paperback by John Donald (October, 2000)
Average review score:

The World in a Grain of SandToo often local history is limited history: it is so concerned with the details of a particular time and place its fails to contextualise, to analysis, to grasp the bigger picture. Good local historians ought to "see the world in a grain of sand", as William Blake would have it. The Little General and the Rousay Crofter is my history book of the moment because it suceeds wonderfully in linking the local with capital 'H' History. Okay, I'm basis - I come from Orkney and am interested in the place. But I am sure that folk with no Orkney connection would find the story of the debt-ridden General with an empire career behind him and his struggle with the crofters and Free Kirk Minister on the Orkney island of Rousay compelling. Thomson never falls back on stereotypes of the bad landlord exploiting poor crofters, but instead picks through the evidence with great care. The result is a detailed and (I think) gripping study of the break-down of old bonds of patronage between the land-owning class and crofters, of the complex allegiances and tensions across a whole community this breakdown suddenly throws into sharp relief, of the politicisation of ordinary people such as the remarkable James Leonard, leader of the crofters. And there are one or two remarkable twists in the tale. Highly recommended, and I've never met William Thomson.

Long Island Seafood Cook Book
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (June, 1971)
Average review score:

A Must Buy! Packed with very Delicious IdeasI love *good* seafood and I am very picky about taste. I have a small collection of ~15 cookbooks and I have looked at over 50+ while browsing in bookstores. I got this cook book as a gamble (you can't browse when you shop online) but because I love seafood and the book was inexpensive, I said "What the heck" and brought it. What I've tried from the book was simply delicious. It's well written, easy to follow, and for the real chefs out there, you can either read it for a skeleton for what you want to make or maybe give you thoughts of different combinations of ingredients you didn't think of or have forgotten about. I normally do not rank many things very highly but this is one of the few that made it to the top of my list. Oh yes, did I mention that the book is less expensive and has better receipes than other more expensive cookbooks out there? One thing I should mention is that it's not just a seafood cookbook. Happy Cooking!
